27 November 2004. An announcement to our cousins from Dr. Bassam Abdel-Kareem Abdel-Raheem (Ahmad Ismael Branch).
The General Assembly of the Abu-Hijleh Diwan met on the second day of Eid Al-Fitr. One of its recommendations was the assigning of a “liaison officer” for the Diwan in other countries where there is a grouping of family members who are interested in the supporting the Diwan and its activity. Thus, as the secretary of the current Diwan’s administrative committee, I am extending this invitation to all our cousins who are interested in such a “task” to contact me via e-mail. In return I will advise them by e-mail of the activities and decisions of the Diwan. We at the Diwan hope that this will enable our expatriate cousins to feel closer to the Diwan and be able to contribute to its success so that it can better serve all of Abu-Hijleh family members.
Please email for more information.

5 February 2004. An announcement to our cousins from Bassam Abdel-Kareem Abdel-Raheem (Ahmad Ismael Branch).
The family Diwan is open and would welcome membership and donations from all the Abu-Hijleh clan in all countries. The membership is 25 JD per year. There is no limit on the value of donations. The Diwan is important for all members whether they are in Jordan or other countries. It is a place for all Abu-Hijleh members to meet and strengthen their ties. It is also very important in that it helps establish the family name and make its presence more prominent. This issue is very important in Jordan and other countries. I encourage all cousins to join in to show support for the Diwan during its first years. This is a very crucial time for the Diwan. If we cannot generate enough membership and participation it will fade away and will probably never be restarted. Suggestions are encouraged and welcomed. Please email for more information.

11 October 2002. Died a martyr Shaden, wife of Dr. Jamal Abdel-Kareem (Abdel-Raheem Mousa Branch) and mother of Saed, Raed , Rami and Lana. The Israeli patrol killed Shaden as she was doing her embroidery at the door step of her house some twenty meters away from the street. An Israeli jeep stopped suddenly and opened fire at the Abu Hijleh's for no reason. There were no provocations -as the army calls them--; no stone throwing nor demonstrations to give excuse to the soldiers to open fire, but they did. Shaden died on the spot, two bullets hit her in the heart and neck, Dr. Jamal and Sa'ed suffered shrapnel wounds and were rushed to hospital.
In 1967, Shaden resigned her post as a schoolteacher to protest Israeli decision to alter the curriculum in Palestinian schools. Instead, she dedicated her time to activism, getting involved in grassroots organizing on a host of issues, ranging from opposition to house demolitions and land confiscations, to literacy campaigns and income-generating projects for women. As well, Shaden co-founded the Palestinian Society for the Protection of the Environment. Nabulsis fondly remember her reprimanding folks for cigarette smoking, regardless of their age, gender, or social standing.
More recently, Shaden was active in distributing food for the hungry in Nablus; dividing the donated flour, sugar, rice and milk into small packages and taking them to needy families who lost their livelihood due to high unemployment rates exasperated by a curfew that has lasted 113 days.
Shaden was elected and served on the Executive Committee of the Women's Social and Cultural Association, Women's Affairs Center, and a number of social justice groups in Nablus.
May she rest in peace.

6 November 2001. Died a martyr Ali Ibraheem Kamel (Ibraheem Esa Branch).
Eyewitnesses testified that Israeli occupation troops on Tuesday opened fire on three wounded Palestinian civilians who were lying down at a road at the village of Tel near Nablus, killing all the three. A Palestinian Red Crescent official, Muahmmed Ayyad said:"The soldiers forced us to treat an Israeli soldier who was badly wounded by Palestinian guerillas. However, when the soldier died due to his fatal wounds, the soldiers opened fire at three Palestinians who were lying down on the road." He described the Israeli killing as "extra-judicial execution.".
Kamal Hinawi, an ambulance driver, said his team of emergency workers received a call about 1 p.m. and drove down a dirt road to the bottom of a hill, where they saw Israeli soldiers carrying a wounded comrade. Hinawi said the Israeli soldiers told him and the other rescue workers that the three Palestinians were alive, but two were wounded. Before going farther down the road to treat the Palestinians, he said, the Israelis asked the Palestinian paramedics to examine the Israeli soldier. Upon telling an officer that the soldier was dead, Hinawi said he was told, "Your friends are dead." The officer spoke into a walkie-talkie. From a distance, Hinawi said he saw Israeli soldiers form an arc around the wounded Palestinians and fire. Afterward, Hinawi said he inspected the bodies and found that all three had died of massive head wounds at close range.
The three martyrs were Iyad Odeh al-Khateeb (28 years), Ali Abu Hijleh (22 Years) and Jamal Malloh (23 years). The three martyrs came from the village of Deirestya near Nablus. May they rest in peace.
